<big>A Note From the Headteacher

"Mells is a great little school..."

Mells School is a great little school, combining the supportive "family" atmosphere of the village school with a curriculum which is broad, effective and up-to-date.

I am very much enjoying this, my third small-school headship, and I am a strong advocate of small village schools.

I am impressed year after year at the success we achieve here at Mells.

Success can be measured in many ways but most importantly, I believe,  in the happiness of our children.

We achieve good standards in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science and we continue to improve the range of activities on offer across the whole curriculm. Some excellent work has taken place in Media Arts, including Filmmaking, Drama and Music and our annual Christmas Concert is very much enjoyed by all. Past pupils seem to value their time here at Mells and often visit us for many years after they leave the school.

It is my belief that children's success in such subjects as Art, Music, Drama, Filmmaking and Sport can have a dramatic effect of self-esteem and motivaton and, in turn, generates success across the whole curriculum.

Our priorities for development this year are focussed on:

  • Improving the School Building, grounds and aestheics (including the Art Curriculm)
  • Stregthening Mathematics (targetting especially, Mental Maths, Data Handling and Shape)
  • Improving the social and emotional aspects of learning through the integration of SEAL materials into our PSHE
  • Developing work on "Keeping Healthy"
  • Improving writing, especially for boys

Full details of these plans are contained in our School Development Plan which can be downloaded from this site via the "Documents" tab.

As I write, the school resembles a building site as work takes place on a fantastic new Nursery building, the new school field, the devlopment of the school grounds and a rather wonderful limestone monster!

Despite our being a small school in a lovely rural situation, we are never isolated as we work closely with the other sixteen schools in the "Frome Community Learning Partnership" and, in particular with the local schools at Leigh and Nunney. Our work together ensures that school imrovement considers a local and community viewpoint. Continuity from school-to-school is much improved by our common approach and good communication.

The success of our school depends on the enthusiasm and hard work of our staff, the support of our parents and the continuing commitment of our governors. In all these respects we are very fortunate indeed.

We try never to lose sight of the fact that it is the children's happiness and success that matters most to us all.

If you are thinking of joining us, contact me by phone or e-mail to book a visit - I look forward to meeting you!
