The School Governors

Mells School Governors Vision Statement

At Mells School we work together to provide a stimulating environment where children are motivated to learn and in which they can live and grow happily together.
Our vision is of children achieving independence, success and a feeling of self-worth so that they can fulfill their own potential and contribute to the good of others.

The Role of the Governors

Although recent legislation has changed the organisation and procedures of school governing bodies, the key elements of their role have remained unchanged.

· The governing body has a strategic role, helping to formulate and monitor overall policy, but does not involve itself in the day-to-day running of the school.

· Responsibility for the management, internal organisation and control of the school lies with the headteacher. So, for example, the governing body works with the head to agree a school development plan, but it is the head who has responsibility for carrying it out.

· A governing body acts in a collective way, i.e. individual governors do not hold particular powers.

· Certain decisions, such as the formal agreeing of the annual budget, must be taken by the governing body.

· In a voluntary-controlled school, such as Mells, the governing body does not have responsibility for admissions; these are managed by the Local Education Authority.

A common way to describe the role of the governing body is to say that it acts as a "critical friend", offering support and constructive advice.

The governing body at Mells meets twice a term. However, in order to get through the work involved, some of the responsibilities are delegated to various committees. Each committee will usually meet once or twice a term. Committees report back to the full governing body which then makes any final decision that might be necessary.
